Evening zazen at New York Zendo is held five times a week; Tuesday through Friday. Wednesday evening zazen is for members only. Morning zazen is held Tuesday through Fridays except during Dai Bosatsu Zendo sesshin, see NYZ calendar for more specific dates or call our office. On Tuesday evenings there is an optional Tai Chi class after one period of sitting. As a supplement to zazen practice, Tai Chi increases energy, releases and transforms negative mental and emotional aspects, by harmonizing body, mind, and spirit. On Saturday mornings there is a chanting service with two periods of zazen ending with an informal tea. About one Saturday a month, a Japanese Dharma class is offered by Eido Shimano Roshi. This class is strictly for fluent Japanese speakers only. During the summer and winter interim breaks, the zendo is closed.
New York Zendo Shobo-Ji is open for zazen (sitting meditation) five days a week, as well as a weekly Thursday Introduction class. Offered throughout the year are All-Day Sittings, Weekend Sesshin (retreats), Dharma talks by senior members, as well as special events and ceremonies. We welcome all newcomers but people who have never sat with us before must come to at least one Thursday Introduction to Zen before coming to any other scheduled event.
New York Zendo is open only during designated Zazen periods for Zen practice; there is no sightseeing, photographs or private meditation.
